Poigai Azhwar Avathara Utsavam – Yathokthakari Perumal – Kanchipuram Day 9

Poigai Azhwar Avathara Utsavam – Yathokthakari Perumal – Kanchipuram Day 9

While on their pilgrimage, the three Mudhalazhwars also had the divine vision of Sita Ramar along with Lakshmanan, Bharatar & Shatrugnar at Ayoydya and Thirupathi Perumal down the hill itself (as they hesitated to step on the hill) Namazhwar & Thiurmangai azhwar hail them as ‘In Kavi Paadum Parama Kavigal’- the greatest poets who sang the sweetest songs’ & ‘ Senthamizh Paaduvaar’- ‘ Those who sang in chaste Tamizh’ respectively

Swami Desikan in his Dehaleesa Stuthi (is about the same Thirukovilur perumal where the mudhal azhwars had the vision of the Lord) brilliantly compares the Mudhal azhwars andhadi’s to the triple stream of Ganga. The unanimity of thought and purpose of the three AzhwArs is compared to the three branches of the same river (srothasthrayam) . Hence our tradition claims to enjoy these three prabhandhams in unison. One needs to read Dehaleesa Stuthi to dwell on the avataram and special experiences of Mudhal azhwars namely Poigai Azhwar, Boodhathazhwar, Peyazhwar.

Once some kids were playing on the road pretending to construct a temple, installing an idol of the Lord, offering fruits and flowers etc., all the time  using the dust on the road for the purpose.  They offered some mud as prasadam to Ramanuja who was passing along , he received it with due respect.

He remembered in this connection the words of Poigai Azhwar who said that the Lord  took whatever name and form his sincere devotees wished and in the instant case  though the kids were only playing, they sincerely believed in what they were  doing.

Of the 100 pasurams in Mudhal thiruvandhadhi, Poigai aazhwar has composed only one pasuram on Lord Renganathan. But nevertheless, it has great insight that Rengan is our one and only Lord and we should never ever let Him go of our thoughts.

Poygai AzhwAr’s paasuram addresses all those, who have a poor understanding of the mahimai of Sriman nArAyaNaa as the ParamAthman and DevAthi Devan. He addresses these poor folks as “yEzhaikAL”, or the spiritually poor, who have lost sight of the imperishable wealth, Sriman nArAyaNaa as their one and only Lord.

Poigai Alwar Avathara Utsavam – Yathokthakari Perumal – Kanchipuram Day 5

Untitled

Poigai Azhwar once visited Mrugandu Maharishi’s Ashramam at Thirukoviloor. It was day time, but it darkened and started raining heavily. The wandering Poigai Alvar found out a small hide out, which has a space for one person to lie down. Boodathazhwar arrived there looking for a hiding place and Poigai accommodated him, with both sitting together. In the meanwhile, Peyazhwar also came to the same place as all the three preferred to stand because of lack of space. The darkness became dense and inside the small room, they were not able to see each other. In the meanwhile, they felt a fourth person also forced his way among them. The three azhwars realised from the light of the lightning that the fourth one had a charming face that was sublime and divine. The trio could immediately realize that it was Vishnu who was huddling among them. Poigaiazhwar wished to see Vishnu’s face continuously but could view only from the simmering light of the lightening. With a view to maintain the continuity of light, he instantly composed hundred songs wishing the earth to be a big pot full of ghee like an ocean where the Sun could be the burning wick.

Lord Brahma wanted to do a Yagna.  He did it without his wife Saraswathi.  So she got angry and wanted to spoil the Yagna and came running with full force as a River.  As brahma requested Lord Vishnu to protect his Yagna, he went and lay in front of the fiery river and Saraswati being a woman was taken aback by the form of a man lying in her path and she was overcome with the feeling of shyness, since she was overcome by the feeling of shyness she lost her anger. This is depicted by the humbled Saraswathi Devi is seen at the foot of the resting Lord (Vishnu Sethu) with folded hands.

Since, the force (Vegam) is reduced by him, he is called Vega Sethu.  This is the name of the Urchavamoorthy, we see in the Pic.

Poigai Azhwar, an incarnation of Mahavishnu’s Paanchajanyam, (Divine Conch / Sangu (in Tamil).

He is called Adhi Kavi as he wrote the first hundred pasurams of Naalayira Dhivya Prabhandam (4000 Sacred Songs on Lord Vishnu by the twelve Azhwars)

His 100 pasurams were in Andhadhi style means the last word of the previous song will be the first word of the new song.  The first song is as below:

Vaiyam Thagaliya Varkadale neyyaga

Veyyakadiron vilakkaka cheyya …

Sudar Azhiyan adikkey sootinen Shon malai

Idaraazhi neengugavendru

Meaning of the song :

Keeping the Universe as the (Agal) Lamp, Sea as the Ghee for lighting the lamp and to make the Sun as the light on the lamp, make this garland of words to the feets of the Lord who holds Chakra in his hands for removing the ocean of diificulties.

Thiurmazhisai Azhwar’s disciple (Shishya) Kanikannan was forced by the King to sing about him. When refused by Kanikannan, the king ordered him to get away from Kanchi. Hence, he came to Thirumazhisai Azhwar, explained everything and started moving out of Kanchi. Then, Thirumazhisai Azhwar told the lord Vishnu to roll his snake bed and get out of Kanchi and his disciple is going out of Kanchi. Then Lord Vishnu followed him.
