பல்லி வரலாறு : ஸ்ரீ ஸ்ருங்கி பேரர் என்னும் முனிவரின் இரு குமாரர்கள் கௌதம முனிவரிடம் சிஷ்யர்களாக இருந்த போது பூஜைக்கு தீர்த்தம் கொண்டு வந்ததில் பல்லிகள் இறந்து கிடந்ததை கண்டு முனிவர் கோபம் கொண்டு இருவரையும் பல்லிகளாகும்படி சபித்துவிட்டார்.பிறகு சிஷ்யர்கள் வேண்டிக் கொண்டதால் காஞ்சி சென்றால் மன்னிப்பு உண்டு என கூறிவிட்டார்.பிறகு இருவரும் சப்தபுரிகளையும் சுற்றி வந்து விட்டு வரதராஜ பெருமாளிடம் மோட்சம் கேட்டனர்.பெருமாள் உங்கள் ஆத்மா வைகுந்தம் செல்ல சரீரம் பஞ்ச உலோகத்தில் என் பின்புறம் இருக்க என்னை தரிசிக்க வருபவர்கள் உங்களை தரிசித்தால் சகல தோசம் நீங்கி ஷேமம் உண்டாகும். சூரியன் சந்திரன் இதற்கு சாட்சி என்று மோட்சம் அளித்தார்.ஆகையால் இத்தரிசனம் மிக முக்கியமானதாகும். தோஷ நிவர்த்தி பெற இந்த பல்லிகளை வணங்குகிறார்கள்.

Golden Lizard
Shree Shrungi Bearer’s two sons were studying with Gowthama Munivar, as his disciples. Once, when they brought water for their Guru’s morning rituals, there were dead Lizards in that water. On seeing the dead lizards in the water for the rituals, Gowthama Rishi got wild and cursed them to become Lizards.
On the request of his disciples, he told them to go to Kanchipuram. The two came to Kanchipuram seeking Moksha from Varadharaja Perumal. The Lord Varadharaja appeared in front of them and gave Moksha to them stating as below: “ Let your souls attain Moksha (Mukthi) and the Lizard body’s will be made of Panchalogam at the back of me. Those who all see you after worshipping me in the temple, will get rid of their sins & Curses and will be benefited with all the wealths. Sun and Moon will be witnesses for this”.
As, it is considered very special as it gives relief from all the curses & Sins, people worship this Golden & Silver Lizards with Sun & Moon in the same place at the back side of Varadharaja sannidhi.
