What Is an Anaiya Vilakku?
"Anaiya" means "that which does not go out" and "vilakku" means lamp. An anaiya vilakku is a lamp kept burning continuously before the deity – a symbol of the divine presence that never leaves the sanctum. Temples maintain anaiya vilakkus in the garbhagriha and in front of shrines, and many devotees donate one to a temple as an offering. Read more about the meaning of anaiya vilakku.

Anaiya Vilakku for Temple
For temples, the anaiya vilakku is placed in or near the sanctum so the flame is visible to devotees during darshan. A 3 feet model suits most sanctums and prayer halls; the 5 feet model gives a commanding presence in a mandapam or at the entrance of a shrine. Temples with several sub-shrines often use 2 feet models for each sannidhi.
Anaiya Vilakku for Home
At home, the 1 feet and 2 feet models fit comfortably beside the pooja mandir. Families with a dedicated pooja room or a private family temple choose the 3 or 5 feet models. See our anaiya vilakku for home guide for placement and safety tips.
Why an Enclosed Anaiya Vilakku?
-
Steady flame: glass panels shield the flame from fans, breeze and drafts.
-
Cleaner sanctum: the enclosure keeps soot and oil splashes contained.
-
Safer: the flame is protected from cloth, flowers and accidental contact.
-
Easy to refill: a front door gives access to the lamp for oil and wick.
-
Durable build: our anaiya vilakkus have a stainless steel frame with glass panels and a brass lamp inside.
How to Choose the Right Size
- Measure the space and the viewing distance – the flame should be clearly visible at darshan height.
- Use 1–2 ft for pooja rooms and sub-shrines, 3 ft for sanctums and prayer halls, 5 ft for mandapams and large family temples.
- Place it on a level floor or platform, away from curtains and garlands.
