• Soolam and vel are not the same weapon. The vel is Lord Murugan's spear, a single, leaf-shaped blade on a long shaft, closely tied to Subramanya worship. The soolam (trident) has three prongs and belongs to Lord Shiva and, in Amman temples, to the Goddess herself as a symbol of Shakti. If your worship centres on Murugan or Subramanya, you want a vel. If it's Amman, Shiva, or a Devi-focused shrine, the soolam is the traditional choice.
• Amman-face vs. plain designs. The Muppattai and Pattai Sulam come in a plain trident form and in an Amman-face version, where the Goddess's face is worked into the base. Amman-face pieces run larger (3 ft and above) and cost more; plain trishuls in the same styles start much smaller and lower-priced for home altars.
• Brass vs. copper. Brass is the more common, lower-cost choice across every style here. Copper versions of the same design, including Vel, VajjiraVel and Muppattai Sulam, typically cost 3 to 6 times more, and are chosen when copper is specifically preferred for the shrine's other ritual items.
• Installing outdoors or permanently? Brass and copper both develop a natural patina with outdoor exposure over time. For a soolam or vel that will stay mounted outdoors permanently, plan for periodic cleaning or a protective coating, and confirm mounting hardware separately at the time of order.
